Auteur Study - Mark Romanek

Scream by Michael Jackson (1995)

This was a testament to Michael's career and showed his troubled relationship with the media as in 1993, allegations of sexual child abuse were put against him and this video is a creative way of denying the rumours to his fans. It has a modernistic feel as it uses simple colours like black and white and has a supernatural location as it is set in a spaceship. The final clip in the video shows disorientations of his face which highlights the anger that Michael had towards the media.

Can't Stop by Red Hot Chili Peppers (2002)

This video involves no pans. It is created using a series of shots mashed together. This adds a comedic element to the video. Similar to Michael Jackson's Scream, it uses a plain white background, however, Mark used various props to add colour.

Speed of Sound by Coldplay (2005)

Similar to the first two videos, it is filmed in one location/room. The camerawork is shaky which could suggest that the camera is handheld. Differentiating from the norm, Mark decided to use as little light in this production as possible. The only source of light is from the large screen at the back of the room as it flashes vibrant colours from time to time which could link in with the lyrics in the chorus about how "lights go flying at the speed of sound". It uses a lot of close up shots especially of the lead vocalist, Chris Martin. The only time you see the full band is in the final clip where they stand in a line in front of a bright white background.
