Andrew Goodwin's points
1) The relationship between lyrics and the visuals either illustrating amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
In our video you see the relationship between the lyrics and visuals to be contradicting each other. As the lyrics state "Got it in the bag, Yes i've got it in the bag" this is implying that the protagonist has got it in the bag in terms of getting the girls. We contradicted the lyrics instead and made out that he didn't have it in the bag resulting to disastrous outcomes for the protagonist. This produced a comical element to the music video. A major lyric which helped identify the actual location of the music video was when Wiley rapped, "Gotta do this for myself cus i might need the lovin, she might need it too we both out clubbin" The lyrics highlight that Wiley is in a club which is something we took into account at the time, however with none of us being 18 at the time we couldn't film in a club and hiring a club would have been expensive for us. We could of tried to find a empty room and decorate it into a club but we thought a house party would be better to for us as it was an easy place for everyone to access.
2) Relationships between music and visuals either illustrating amplifying or contradicting the music.
A strong part of this point is when it is the runway scene. The audience can clearly see that they are dancing with the music because they are dancing in time. There is a lack of performance shots and external shots because the narrative is what we want the audience to focus on. Therefore there are only small sections of the video where the music and visuals are illustrated. The star persona in our video used alot of hand movements which linked into the music as well as the camerawork. The camerawork would move in time with the music in some of the lip-syncing scenes.
3) Particular music genres may have their own music video style and iconography (such as live stage performance in heavy rock)
We have definitely highlighted this point as we have kept it in a house party location. This is a common convention used in the Grime genre as normally uses the house party location or even a secluded club. That is why we stuck to Goodwin's conventions and researched the where they songs of this genre would be. The lip-syncer (me) dress in the clothes they would normally wear; a snapback, varsity jacket and pop art t-shirt. We limited ourselves to one location as many grime videos restrict themselves to one or two locations.
4) The artist may develop their own other iconography in and out of their videos which overtime becomes part of their star image.
In our music, the audience get a sense of the star persona as the storyteller. Normally, you would expect to see the artist as part of the story but in our music video you don't. Instead you see our star persona tell the story from a different shot. It's as if the star persona has no problem with getting girls and is showing examples of how other guys don't get girls. Our star persona in our music video was me and the audience can already identify the style that i might obtain in future music videos due to me staying in the same clothing throughout the video. With a lot of close-ups the audience will be able to remember the hand movements which were iconic in the video.
5) Like it to be reference to voyeurism (the act of sexualised looking) this may explain the treatment of women in the media
In reference to voyeurism, we didn't exposed the women too much in a sexualised way. Despite having a song which would mean exploiting women a lot, we kept it minimal where you would see the protagonist touch various body parts of the women like the leg or the lips. What we lacked was close-ups of the women, which would further of sexualise them but our approach was to show that the women were in charge and to contradict the convention further.
6) Intertextual references either to other music videos, films or other media texts
There isn't really any obvious intertextual references in this music video.
Key Micro Elements
Camera work
The camera work in this music video is very shaky which works for most scenes but not for all. It could be seen as effective because the music is upbeat. We include a lot of variation of shots in order to make the video interesting. Especially in the lip-syncing we have a lot of close up shots of the lip-syncer which means we have to make sure everything is in sync. Even the lip-syncing scenes there is variation as there is a mid-shot on the sofa where the audience see several people on the sofa. There is a tracking shot of the lip-syncer(me) where the audience get to see me lip-syncing from a different view. We even include a zoom in some parts of the lip-syncing scenes. The narrative scenes are mostly stationary with other shots taken from a different angle.
Editing
The main editing technique in this music video is cutting. We used the razor tool to complete this action and place them in time with the music. We managed to get a fade in at the start of the video. With limited time we were unable to add any other editing techniques. We hope to brighten the music video as it is very dark which may cause viewers difficulty to see it. Hopefully we can add some special effects as well to amplify the reactions from the girls. More over the cuts we produce produce a effective cutaway from the narrative back to the lip-syncer
Mise en Scene
The Mise en Scene is very effect as it definitely indicates that there is a party going on. From the very start you see the protagonist come into the party and in the background you see people dancing and throwing balloons in the air. The first part of the music video doesn't really highlight that party enough as you mainly see the lip-syncer dominating most of the video then. Even in the first narrative, you only see them two in the clip and so it looks like an empty party. The balloons play an important part in the music video as the audience can physically see them more clearly than the glow sticks which don't light up properly. We manage to get the conventionally props of a party like glow sticks, balloons and drinks but the props aren't really highlighted in the music video as much. Towards the end of the music video when the narrative has finished, we start to see more of the party as the run way (a typical convention) is shown in the video with cut to the guest playing with the silly string.
Sound
There is no sound at the start of our music video which may confuse the audience into thinking that their sound isn't working. There is only one main sound source in this music video which is the music. We are hoping to add more sound effects in order to enhance our music video further by adding foley sound when the protagonist get slapped or when the balloon pops. This way it can add to the effect.
