Rough-Cut Evaluation using Goodwin's Six Points and Micro-Elements

Goodwin's Points

1.)Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).

Narrative is used in our music video of cause-effect sequencing of our protagonist and the three different scenarios. The setting establishe is a house party, commonly seen in many other music videos  with similar music genres.

2.)There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

The visuals should contradict the lyrics. This is shown through our protagonsit who claims he has it in "in the bag" however, is actually is completely unsucessful with women as it is shown through the three different scenarios, adding humorous quality to the music video.

3.)There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).

There is a combination of quick cuts of the girls on the sofa that were cut to each beat in the song. Apart from that there is still much editing that we are planning to do for the final outcome in order to establish a relationship between the music and the visuals that unfortuanately cannot yet be seen on the rough cut. For an example we were thinking of adding flashes of images of the party scenery at the beginning to match the quick beat.

4.)The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).

There are numerous of close-ups, lip-synching and quick shots of our artist shown throughout the music video. Our lead singer's outfit choice- snapback, to match the original artist's look and the music genre.

5.)There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.

It is common to see frequent use of notion of looking in our artists' such as Wiley music videos. For an example in Can You Hear Me music video, the camera pans across female body parts; objectifying them. However, we had avoided voyeuristic treatment of the female body in our music video.

6.)There is often inter textual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc).

There are no intertextual references that can be seen in our music video.

Micro-elements

Camera

There is a range of different shots used such as stationary, mainly used when we just wanted still shots of our artist lip-synching to the track. There is also handheld shots used, such as when the camera pans around the room at 360 degrees or a pan to the protagonists' reaction when he gets rejected.

Editing

So far the editing done is pretty basic; we had added most of the shots in a sequence of events with cuts in between of the lead singer lip-synching to the lyrics which we are still perfecting. For the editing we are also planning on brightening the shots so that they are more visible.

Sound

At the moment there is only the track that can be  heard. We are thinking of adding other sound effect of the track rewinding at the beginning of  the music video and possibly few sound effects to match the visuals such as the baloon popping.

Mise-en-scene

House party themed, props seen inlcude glowsticks, balloons and drinks, all the quests are wearing casual clothing; reflecting typical traits seen at house parties.
