Rough Cut Evaluation
Goodwin's Music Video Conventions Analysis:
1. Music video demonstrate genre characteristics -
Our music video shows our lead singer in a party scene which is common for videos of the grime genre. In modern day grime genre videos, these parties can either occur inside a house, like in our video, or even in an abandoned and empty space. They can also occur outside or around a pool.
The lyrics and visuals are illustrative in our music video. This is shown through the narrative aspect of the video with our protagonist claiming that he has it "in the bag" which the song suggests. However, in some parts, the lip-synching is out of time with the lyrics. This problem can be resolved by further editing and alining the clips with the track.
3. The relationship between music and visuals -
In parts of our Rough Cut, the music and the visuals are illustrative. For example, from 0:47 to 0:48, the girls appear on the sofa in time with the beat of the music.
4. A visual style -
Our Rough Cut involves a lot of close up shots of our lead singer. The artist of the song Wiley, in his video for Can You Hear Me, is in an ill-lit room with people dancing. It's not quite the party scene that we are portraying in our video, however, it does involve subtle elements that we used in our video. Wiley also uses a lot of hand gestures whilst performing and that's what we made our lead singer do in our video to portray Wiley in a suitable way.
5. Voyeurism or the objectification of women -
None of this is shown in our music video.6. Intertextual reference to films, TV, magazines etc -
Although there are many branded products in our video, none of which are linked to another media product such as a TV show, film or magazine.
Key Micro Elements:
The camerawork in our video uses hand held shots during the lip-synching parts. Because of this, the camera work is slightly shaky. We also use stationary shots for our scenarios on the sofa to show it from a specific point of view. Our editing shows that the lip synching is out of time with the lyrics at some points. No particular transitional effects are used within our rough cut. For the mis-en-scene, we featured a lot of party items such as silly string, party poppers and balloons to show the audience that our video was in fact for a party.
